Organization Overview

Rooted Music Therapy is a Birmingham- and Huntsville-based healthcare practice specializing in Neurologic Music Therapy®—an evidence-based clinical approach that uses music and rhythm to support brain and behavioral change. RMT focuses on helping clients achieve functional outcomes such as improved movement, communication, cognition, and emotional well-being through personalized, goal-oriented care.

RMT was established in Birmingham in 2024 and has already grown to North Alabama, adding school-based services to core hospital and home-based programs. The organization provides individualized therapy services for children and adults across a range of needs, including neurological rehabilitation, developmental support, and chronic health conditions, with delivery options that include in-home sessions, telehealth, outpatient, and inpatient services.

Opportunity

RMT is looking for a passionate Neurologic Music Therapist to join our growing team in North Alabama. This position will primarily focus on providing Neurologic Music Therapy® services to adults with neurologic diagnoses in the home, outpatient clinics, and via tele-health.

A large part of this role will involve helping grow an exciting Parkinson’s Disease program through partnerships with local hospitals and community organizations. The caseload will include a mix of individual sessions, groups, interdisciplinary co-treats, and program development opportunities. Weekly caseload could vary from 15 to 25 treatment hours per week.

Qualifications

  • MT-BC Credential (If eligible for certification, must obtain board certification within sixty (60) days from start date)

  • Neurologic Music Therapy Certification (or be willing to complete training within a year of the hire date).

  • Maintain CBMT certification, additional certifications/trainings, and CMTE credits as needed

  • Maintain AMTA Professional Competencies and CBMT Board certification Domains

  • Strong Clinical Skills

  • Proficient in voice, guitar, and piano 

  • Ability to work independently

  • Comfort with travel-based role; must have a reliable vehicle

  • Tech proficiency (telehealth platforms, documentation systems)

  • Ability to transport and lift instruments and equipment (up to 50 lbs)

Compensation

This is a W-2 employee position. Direct treatment hours are compensated at $35-$40 per hour based on experience and qualifications. This rate is inclusive of planning, documentation, session preparation, set-up, and clean-up.

Compensation is driven by caseload; there is no minimum guarantee. Caseload is actively built with support from the organization, with a goal of maintaining at least 16 hours per week for full-time status. Employees are expected to accept reasonable reassignment or scheduling adjustments to maintain full-time status.

Required meetings and pre-approved administrative work time are compensated at $15 per hour. 


Travel up to 30 miles from your home to the service location is included as part of the job requirements. Mileage is reimbursed at $0.70  per mile over 30 miles. Travel time is not additionally compensated.

In the event of a temporary reduction in billable hours due to client discharge, contract changes, or seasonal fluctuations, full-time benefits will remain in place for up to 90 days while hours are re-stabilized. If billable hours remain below full-time threshold beyond the stabilization period, benefit eligibility may be adjusted accordingly.

Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical practice

  • Demonstrate knowledge in various diagnoses related to neurological injury or disease and general medical diseases (i.e. TBI, stroke, PD, Autism, CP, COPD etc.). 

  • Demonstrate knowledge in various clinical presentations resulting from a neurologic injury or disease (i.e. aphasia, apraxia, left neglect, gait deficits, etc.).

  • Conduct an individual evaluation/assessment and develop a treatment plan using appropriate assessment tools with individualized therapeutic goals and objectives.

  • Conduct a group evaluation/assessment and develop a treatment plan using appropriate assessment tools with individualized therapeutic goals and objectives.

  • Implement NMT interventions across tele-health, in-home, outpatient, and inpatient settings to reach individualized goals and objectives

  • Evaluate patient/client progress through progress reports and documentation of sessions. 

  • Update goals/objectives as needed when met within the treatment plan and complete discharge summaries when appropriate. 

  • Develop “in-home” programs and resources for patients/clients to complete individually.

  • Collaborate within an interdisciplinary team to provide the highest quality of care to our patients/clients.

Operations & Communication

  • Communicate and consult with interdisciplinary teams, parents/guardians, caregivers, other professionals as needed within therapeutic scope about progress. 

  • Travel to/from sessions as needed; sessions scheduled between 8 am and 5 pm

  • Communicate with clients/caregivers/facilities to schedule services

  • Respond to all email requests promptly (within 2  business days unless otherwise specified) and professionally

  • Log all hours and mileage in timesheet by 7pm each Saturday

  • Clean/sanitize instruments and/or equipment with appropriate materials.

Compliance

  • Maintain patient confidentiality as mandated by HIPAA. 

  • Uphold Code of Ethics (AMTA + CBMT), Scope of Music Therapy Practice (AMTA + CBMT), CBMT Code of Professional Practice, and AMTA Standards of Clinical Practice
